Bonnie's Story

When I was in grade twelve, I had had a boyfriend for about a year before I ended up pregnant. I couldn’t turn to anyone in my family and my boyfriend said that his parents would never understand. Nobody would ever find out if I had an abortion---that seemed to be the only way out. With no one to support me, I made all the arrangements. So, I saw the doctor alone. The doctor never told me anything about what was going to happen to me. He just told me that I had to see a psychiatrist and he set up the appointment. I went to the psychiatrist alone. She asked me what my home life was like and when I told her, she said that was reason enough to have an abortion. She didn’t talk about the procedure or the emotional trauma that I might experience. She didn’t even tell me of any other options I might want to consider.

For years after I remained silent and tried to live as if it never happened.
